Stonehenge

Amesbury, Salisbury SP4 7DE, UK

One of the world’s most iconic, and mysterious, prehistoric monuments sits in the English countryside about a 90-minute drive from Portland. Walk among the standing stones that were arranged here some 2,000 to 3,000 years B.C.E., around the same time as the pyramids of Egypt. Some believe Stonehenge was a religious site, but archaeologists have yet to discover its specific purpose, though the arrangement of the stones indicates it may have been connected to astronomy. The monument is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
